David Bowie’s 2016 LP “Blackstar” is a year old this month. And it has been a year since the legendary star passed away. The band that Bowie chose to back him on “Blackstar”—the world-class jazz ensemble Donny McCaslin Group—will visit Arden Gild Hall on Jan. 14. Featuring four of the top musicians in the New York jazz scene, this ensemble has been nominated for multiple Grammys. Just after Bowie’s passing, the band was grief-stricken, but Donny managed to pay tribute to his time in the studio with Bowie, and offered a crowd at Manhattan’s Village Vanguard a cover of “Warszawa” from the classic 1970s masterpiece “Low.” Now the band has incorporated some of “Blackstar” into its repertoire—including the masterful farewell song “Lazarus”—in addition other Bowie songs, unexpected covers and great originals.
