Big Weekend in Milton

There are two can’t-miss events in Milton this weekend.

Saturday, August 14, is Milton Family Fun Day. Here’s your chance to see the newly restored (and very quaint) downtown Milton while learning a bit about its history. The town is pulling out all the stops, offering a display of antique and modern fire vehicles, fire engine rides for kids, a magic show with Steve Woyce of Full Effect Productions, a junior bucket brigade contest, clipper express train rides, museum and library exhibits, a scavenger hunt and free food.

Also, the Milton Theatre will show the indie film “Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing” August 13-14. Its writer and director, Linda Thornburg, will present the film and lead a discussion at its conclusion.

“Mrs. Stevens Hears the Mermaids Singing” has a cult following and an interesting history. You are best served by visiting its official Website at myspace.com/mermaidssinging. The synopsis below is from that site, but there also are a lot of interesting tidbits about the film you may find intriguing.

“Through narrative and flashback, the film tells the story of the writer Hilary Stevens, a major novelist of the 1920s who ultimately rejected narrative fiction to become a poet. The film begins in the 1960s with Hilary as an elderly woman preparing for the arrival of two interviewers; one is a young female reporter yearning for validation from Mrs. Stevens and eager for lessons on how to be both a woman and a writer.

Through the memories of Mrs. Stevens, the film examines the growth of feminism and the conflicts of career versus family. The fascinating life of a fashionable and brilliant woman—her loves, her trials, her conflicts and resolutions—are all conveyed in a lush visual style that transports the viewer back in time. Rare are the films that examine the lives of our elders; even more rarely are they this well done, as director and screenwriter Linda Thornburg (making her first feature film) brings a deft touch to a compelling story.”
