Catch the “Waves” at Rehoboth's Gallery 50

Artist Pat Whitehead’s emotion-driven exhibition is on display until July 13.

Before it ends on July 13, see the exhibition of works by renowned artist Pat Whitehead at Gallery 50 Contemporary Art & Frame Shop in Rehoboth Beach.

Whitehead was born in New York in 1949, and received her bachelors of fine arts from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. Even with a successful career in graphic design for more than 25 years, she always continued her painting and studio practice. She eventually turned to painting full time, and spent over seven years immersed in her art while living in the Caribbean and traveling extensively in Europe and the United States. She has recently embarked on a series of works that explore the effect our surroundings have on us as individuals, and our encounters with others who share that space.

“Sometimes the entry in to a new environment is quick and dramatic, like a wave rushing in,” Whitehead says. “Often it is subtle, with a stealth-like quality that changes our world without us being consciously aware of the change. When we look back in time, we recognize the transition. There often is an emotional connection to that particular time and place that affected that change. I am trying to capture that moment. Each viewer will interpret it based on their own history, creating their own reality, but it is still very personal to me.”

After a decade of immersion in the natural world, the “Waves” were begun in earnest as a series over six years ago. The progression of visual connection between private viewer and nature eventually overlapped in to the “Branches” paintings. People have become entangled in the scenes in the “Encounter” series, and now, in “Cities,” they find calm and introspection in a world of turmoil. Environment always affects participants in a unique way, and vice versa. Many of the works in this exhibition will focus on the interiors of museums, each with a famous painting in the background, but what you’ll find is this work is more about the people than the famous work of art. You can’t help but be transported into the piece and feel emotion from the characters. Pat Whitehead’s work has been represented in countless solo and group exhibitions in the United States and the Caribbean. Her work is in numerous private collections. In 2014 she was juried in as a member of the National Association of Women Artists.
