Comprised of paintings by Edward L. Loper Sr. from the University Collection, and opening one day before what would have been the artist’s 100th birthday, “The Edward L. Loper, Sr. Collection: A Centennial Exhibition” offers an opportunity for new audiences, as well as his students, friends and others who knew him to see more than 20 works on display by one of Delaware’s most beloved painters. Loper’s work first came to the University of Delaware in 1967, when the class of 1941 gifted the painting “Buildings.” More than three decades would pass before the university would acquire “Winter Still Life” and the portrait “Benoit Coté.” In 2006, the bequest of the late Edward L. Loper, Sr. and his wife, Janet Neville Loper, brought to the University of Delaware a significant collection of the artist’s works, which has continued to grow since the his death in 2011, thanks to individual donors and to Janet’s continued generosity. This exhibition of paintings by Loper in the University of Delaware collection represents the span of Loper’s career from 1941 to 2011.
Audiences are invited to attend a lecture by Brian Scott Miller, followed by a reception on April 9, 12–2 p.m. The lecture will occur at noon in Willard Hall Education Building Room 104 (16 West Main St.). The Reception will occur in Old College Lobby (18 E. Main St.) after the lecture. Old College Gallery will be open for viewing 12-5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
