More than 800 paintings, drawings, sculptures, graphic projects, interior designs and other works are being shown in the 20th annual Delaware College of Art and Design Student Exhibition, which will be on view for five weeks starting tonight. Students from each of DCAD’s six areas of study (animation, fine arts, graphic design, illustration, interior design and photography) created the items as part of their respective curricula. Most of the artwork was created in 2016, and some was made during the last month. DCAD faculty members—both full-time area coordinators and adjunct instructors—selected the pieces from among the thousands completed. Each faculty member designed and placed the displays, which are grouped by assignment, course or medium. A number of students assisted with this curatorial work.
An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 3 in the Toni & Stuart B. Young Gallery, located at 600 N. Market St. in downtown Wilmington. The event will coincide with the city’s First Friday Art Loop for February and with DCAD’s Family & Alumni Weekend. The exhibition will remain on view through March 12. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the reception and the show is free and open to the public.
A number of local businesses have provided special weekend offers to DCAD alumni and parents of current DCAD students who attend the opening. These include Chelsea Tavern, Cocina Lolo, the Delaware Art Museum, the Delaware History Museum, Ernest & Scott Taproom, Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant, La Fia Market Bistro, Merchant Bar, Starbucks and Theatre N. The Student Exhibition is the first major event in the observance of DCAD’s 20th anniversary. Other activities will include presentation of the first DCAD Distinguished Alumni Award and the 20th anniversary gala.
