‘Tis the Season
You’ve waited 11 months for it—A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens, which begins Nov. 28. In the Conservatory, fruit-adorned trees tower as high as 18 feet, as red and green apples float in an artistic pattern in the Exhibition Hall. This year, the Music Room display pays homage to the Green Room at the Hotel du Pont with trees of sugared fruit and a lavish holiday tea set for 18 guests. In the outdoor gardens, there are more colorful lights on display than ever. The expanded outdoor experience features a floating tree display, hundreds of sparkling snowflakes, twinkling tree forms, a 12-foot fountain of lights and more. A Longwood Christmas runs until Jan. 12. Already underway are a Brandywine Christmas at the Brandywine River Museum and Yuletide at Winterthur till Jan. 5. At the Brandywine, see dozens of rare antique dolls dressed in beautiful clothing, some in rooms filled with handcrafted furnishings and miniature paintings by members of the Wyeth family. The model railroad,, one of the largest modular layouts in the country, features five trains on 2,000 feet of track through a landscape inspired by southeastern Pennsylvania. Then, of course, there are thousands of whimsical critter ornaments and decorations handcrafted from natural materials by volunteers. At Winterthur, see how generations of du Ponts celebrated the holidays. From sparkling trees to stunningly decorated rooms, there’s something for everyone. Perennial favorites such as the dried flower tree, the March Bank tree, the beautiful decorations, place settings, and faux food may inspire your own holiday decorating and entertaining. This year Yuletide explores lights and wedding celebrations of the mid-1800s. Discover how lights were used not only to brighten long winter nights but also to enrich holiday experiences before electricity. Wedding customs include a display of a candlelit ballroom with a chalked floor that artists would draw as an especially elegant feature for partygoers. Two new rooms join the tour this year—McIntire and Franklin—to highlight these wedding celebrations. longwoodgardens.org
