Chat about Delaware’s arts scene.

Welcome to Delaware Today’s arts blog, the spot to dish on the many cultural opportunities available to Delaware audiences. We’ll cover as many genres as possible, and note cool events offered by organizations large and small, in all three counties.

The holidays are coming. Buy someone you love tickets to a show.

On Saturday, November 21, the Delaware Valley Chorale presents “God’s Trombones” by Roy Ringwald, featuring the poetry of James Weldon Johnson. C. Lawler Rogers serves as guest conductor. Rogers recently retired, so it’s great to see him working the baton.

The event features the City of Wilmington’s cultural affairs director Tina Betz, who shares narrating duties with Joshua Martin. (Betz has done lots of narrating lately.) Also hear soloists Angelyn Robinson (soprano), David Anderson (tenor), and Jeffrey Chapman (baritone).

The performance will include “Mass in G,” by Franz Schubert and Steve Danyew’s “On Green Mountains.”

On November 22, Rogers will offer a pre-concert lecture at 2:15 p.m., at The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew & Matthew in Wilmington. (Same show.)

CoroAllegro, an ensemble of singers who perform a wide variety of choral literature, presents “A Musical Banquet” on Saturday, November 21, at Immanuel Church in Wilmington.

Staffers promise an eclectic mix of music and an interesting food spread at the reception afterward. Not bad for $15.

When it comes to string quartets, it’s hard to beat The Colorado Quartet. Lucky for us the esteemed, nationally celebrated group is part of Coastal Concerts’ lineup, and will play at Bethel United Methodist Church Hall in Lewes on November 21.

The all-female quartet, which consists of two violinists, a viola player and a cellist, has been dubbed the “Fab Four” by the Seattle Times. They’ve also played Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and are the Quartet-in-Residence at Bard College in New York.

Coastal Concerts is booking great talent despite the economic meltdown. Just goes to show that music is a necessity.
