With the order to stay home nowhere near being over, it’s only a matter of time before you run out of things to watch.
While Netflix’s Tiger King and Love is Blind have both taken over our daily text and Twitter conversations, there’s a limited number of episodes for both series. So, what do you plan to watch next?
Well, there’s a variety of movies featuring the state of Delaware, new and old, to enjoy while you’re self-quarantining at home to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Delaware Today has compiled a few of the newest releases and well-known films to give you a head start on binging.
These critically-acclaimed films are set or shot in Delaware, or centered around First State happenings.
Dark Waters (2019)
This legal thriller starring Mark Ruffalo centers on one of the most famous corporations headquartered in Delaware: DuPont. The film is based on the true story of attorney Robert Bilott’s (Ruffalo) legal battle with the company, surrounding toxic chemicals found in the water supply of a town in West Virginia.
While Bilott would typically defend companies like Dupont, his mindset changes after he sees what’s happening to his grandmother’s town.

Dead Poet’s Society (1989)
Set in 1959, this Academy Award-winning film stars late actor Robin Williams, who portrays an English teacher that makes a big impact on his students through his teachings of poetry. Although the film is set at a fictional elite Vermont boarding school, the film was shot at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, and at locations in New Castle and Wilmington.

Fight Club (1999)
This cult classic starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt doesn’t scream it’s set in Delaware, but, there are small clues. This David Fincher film includes subtle hints through addresses and license plates. Plus, the novel by Chuck Palahniuk that the movie is based on puts the original fight club right in Wilmington.

The Irishman (2019)
This Martin Scorsese film is a lengthy one (three and a half hours to be exact), but what is time nowadays anyway? Based on I Heard You Paint Houses, the novel by Delaware author Charles Brandt, the film centers on the life of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) who gets involved with infamous Teamster characters of the 1950s, including Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).

Just Mercy (2019)
This film is centered on the true story of Delaware native and attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan). The young lawyer travels to Alabama to defend Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) who’s been sentenced to death for murder even with the evidence proving his innocence.

Empire Records (1995)
In this 1995 box office bust, the employees of Empire Records, an independent music store in Delaware on the verge of being sold to a large conglomerate, band together to raise enough money to buy the business.

Goosebumps (2015)
The live-action, computer-animated comedy horror mashup based on R. L. Stine’s children’s horror book series of the same name is set in the fictional town of Madison, Delaware. That’s where the First State connections begin and end for this film, which stars Jack Black (School House Rock) as Stine and Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why) as Zach Cooper.

Hiding Out (1987)
Starring Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men, Pretty in Pink), Andrew Morenski is a 27-year-old Boston stock broker on the run from the mob. As he is pursued by hitmen, he finds refuge at a high school in Delaware, where he changes his appearance to that of a student and does his best to adapt.

Survival of the Dead (2009)
A zombie apocalypse film set near the First State? Uh… yep. In this horror film, off the coast of Delaware sits Plum Island, where two families battle for power in the midst of a zombie epidemic.

Trigger Man (2007)
In this low-budget thriller, three friends set out for a day of hunting in Delaware, but things take a turn when they suddenly and mysteriously become the hunted.

Mayor Cupcake (2011)
Starring Lea Thompson (Back to the Future) and Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), this 2011 family comedy about a cupcake mayor who is elected mayor of a small town burdened with debt was shot in multiple locations in Delaware, including Bridgeville and spots at the Delaware beaches.
