A trip to Delaware’s state parks can offer a variety of fun to-dos. They’re also a great place to have picnics! Whether you’re keeping it small or planning a larger get-together, these parks offer the perfect setting to share a meal with friends or family.

Delaware State Parks offer many activities, including fishing, bike riding, hiking, canoeing, fields for soccer, courts for basketball and volleyball, nature programs and more. Having a picnic is a great way to get outdoors, and you can enjoy a variety of alfresco attractions once you’re there. Here are some of the state parks in Delaware that are perfect for picnicking.

Delaware Seashore State Park

Delaware Seashore State Park serves as an important part of the southern Delaware coastline as it boasts six miles of ocean and 20 miles of bay shoreline. This park has an available pavilion on the bayside at Savages Ditch Road. The pavilion is first come, first served with no rental fee. There are picnic tables and grills at Towers Road and the South Inlet Day Area. For picnics with seaside views, Delaware Seashore State Park is the perfect place.

Brandywine Creek State Park

Known for its meadowland views and blue gneiss stone walls, Brandywine Creek State Park contains more than 14 miles of trail and a remnant old-growth forest. This park oversees four nature preserves including Flint Woods, the Carney Tract, Tulip Tree Woods and Fresh Water Marsh. There’s one large pavilion in the park with a capacity of 80 and a picnic area with a capacity for 50. Both are available to reserve for a fee. Find picnic tables and grills near Hawk Watch Hill, the Amphitheater and the Thompson Bridge parking lot.

Bellevue State Park

A former DuPont estate, Bellevue State Park has two pavilions that can be rented for picnics, each with a large grill, volleyball court and horseshoe pits. Visitors can also rent the picnic tables in the picnic areas, the small grills located throughout the park and game bags. Bellevue State Parks ask picnickers to avoid balloons, confetti and amplified music.

800 Carr Road, Wilmington

Cape Henlopen State Park

Cape Henlopen State Park is situated at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, with a coastline that stretches over six miles. The coastal ecosystem is made up of a diverse collection of habitats, so there’s plenty to do and see. For picnics, visitors can rent either the Main Beach Pavilion or the Gordon’s Pond Pavilion. Both offer barbecue grills, electricity, potable water and picnic tables. For larger groups, the Main Beach Pavilion has an extra grill and offers more seating. This pavilion is also close to a basketball court and multiple trails. For even more fun, park guests can make use of the Fishing Pier Pavilion, which is available on a first come, first served basis.

Killens Pond State Park

Named after its 66-acre centerpiece, Killens Pond State Park has pavilions and three picnic areas available to rent. The pavilions include picnic tables, a large charcoal grill, water, electric and trash removal. Separate picnic areas are first come, first served. Visitors are allowed to bring small portable gas grills and alcohol. However, beer kegs are not permitted. Picnickers must also have permission for amplified music, a DJ or using any space outside the pavilion.

5025 Killens Pond Road, Felton

Lums Pond State Park

Surrounding Delaware’s largest freshwater pond, Lums Pond State Park offers recreational activities like disc golf, football, soccer and animal exhibits. This park has five distinct areas, and each includes a restroom and a pavilion, picnic tables or open picnicking areas. Pavilions are available for rent, whereas picnic tables and areas are available by reservation or on a first come, first served basis.
