This June, the Delaware Women’s Chorus will take its talents on a trip to Ireland, where they will have three opportunities to perform as well as take in many of the country’s famous sights. The DWC is The Music School of Delaware’s distinguished all-women’s ensemble. The group is scheduled to perform at St. Mary’s Church in Killarney, present a workshop and concert at the Brockagh Center in Glendalough and perform with an Irish choir at St. Andrew’s Church in Bray. DWC’s program is titled “Hands Across the Water,” with a repertoire of American and Irish folk music. “I am tremendously excited about the three performance opportunities open to us as part of the American Celebration of Music in Ireland,” says ensemble director Joanne Ward. The itinerary also includes visits to the Cliffs of Moher, the Ring of Kerry, Kilkenny, the Wicklow Mountains, Trinity College and Blarney Castle, among others. The trip will finish in Dublin. “I am anxious for the women of DWC to experience this incredibly beautiful country and the warm, welcoming people of Ireland,” says Ward.
She got the idea for the trip from a brochure she was given by Music School president and CEO Kate Ransom. “Under Joanne’s leadership, the Delaware Women’s Chorus has become an outstanding ensemble, and it keeps getting better,” Ransom says. “They share enormous enthusiasm for their process and take well-deserved pride in their accomplishments.” DWC is a strong and cohesive group of women who share a love of music, singing and each other. “I hope that this trip will help establish us as an ensemble of note in the Wilmington choral community,” Ward says. Members of the DWC hail from four states, range in age from 20 to 78 and represent a variety of life styles and ability levels. The group was founded in 2004 as an ensemble for women over 18 who had some singing experience and wanted to revisit those skills in a healthy and supportive atmosphere. A sendoff concert will be held June 9 at 7 p.m. in the Music School’s Wilmington Concert Hall. The concert is free. For more information, visit musicschoolofdelaware.org.
