Dover’s Schwartz Center Celebrates the 150 Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation

The two-day event features Delaware State University’s jazz band, University of Delaware professor Arica Coleman and multimedia presentations.

As the country acknowledges the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover prepares a special two-day celebration. First comes an exploration of modern-day slavery and human trafficking through the documentary film “Not My Life” on Feb. 15. Arica Coleman, assistant professor of Black Studies at the University of Delaware, will also talk about the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment. The program is free. On Feb. 16 the multimedia presentation “Echoes of a Prophet” sets Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s most significant speeches to pictures and music by the DSU Jazz Band and guest pianist Stanley Cowell of Rutgers University. It will be one special day. (678-5152, schwartzcenter.com)
