For Fans of Troy and Gabriella

Senior editor Maria Hess chats about Delaware’s arts scene.

Welcome to Delaware Today’s arts blog, the spot to dish on the many cultural opportunities available to Delaware audiences. We’ll cover as many genres as possible, and note great events offered by organizations large and small, in all three counties.

I continue to be impressed by the quality of shows produced at The New Candlelight Theatre, the only Equity dinner theater in the country.

The 2010 opener is “High School Musical,” which, as any kid will tell you, is the famous story of two high school juniors: Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a math wiz who can sing.

If you’re not a parent, this may not be a big deal. But for anyone who has kids that loved the movie, this show is a must-see. I saw a preview performance Sunday, and was completely intrigued by the two leads, Josh Bernaski and Becca Lee. The cast is energetic and well-choreographed, and the show is well-paced.

Here’s the real deal: I sat with a few teens as well as my 8-year-old son. Excellent reviews from all. Trust me, they know.

The show officially opens this weekend and runs thru February 27.

The Candlelight is in the process of rolling out a Friday Family Fun Nights series. Kids ranging in age from 4-14 get dinner and a show for $10. Consider that a great deal, and a great way to introduce young folks to live theater.
