It’s hard to believe we couldn’t get to this one sooner. Now at the Delaware Art Museum, “Pre-Raphaelites in Print: The Age of Photomechanical Reproduction,” which features 35 stunning photomechanical facsimiles from the museum’s Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art.
The exhibition displays images of Pre-Raphaelite art created by individual photographers and large commercial enterprises, such as the Autotype Company. We think nothing of that imagery today, but before the advent of photography, the only way to see a work of art was to see the original. With photography came printmaking processes and “photomechanical reproduction.”
In the late 19th century, local industrialist Samuel Bancroft prized his collection of photomechanical reproductions. They were good study tools, but he was also fascinated by the technology. He amassed more than 400 works. “Pre-Raphaelites in Print” hits the highlights of that collection.

Expanding Horizons
This week you can see the first juried Horizon Workshops Alumni Photography Exhibition at Gallery 919 Market (on the same-named street in Wilmington). Based in Chesapeake City, Md., Horizon Workshops is recognized by American Photo Magazine as one of the leading workshops in the country. This is your chance to see some of the best work that has resulted from it. The opening reception will be held July 8 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at 919 N.
