Grand Opera House, Clear Space Theatre Company, Delaware Public Archives and Brandywine Baroque, Newark Symphony Orchestra: Delaware Arts and Entertainment

It’s another grand month at—where else?—The Grand. Plus, the Tuskegee Airmen fly into Delaware Public Archives in Dover, Clear Space Theatre Company pays homage to Noel Coward and a trio of concerts should please lovers of traditional music.

A Grand Month

Here’s a random sampling of music at The Grand Opera House this month. First comes Bettye LaVette on Feb. 3, who, according to The New York Times, is nearly on par with Aretha Franklin as the soul singer of her generation. Pianist David Lanz, a pioneer of new age music, plays Feb. 10. Finally, a perennial favorite, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, returns Feb. 12, bringing the rhythms of South Africa and a touch of gospel with them. (Paul Simon fans know the group as the backup on “Graceland.”) There’s no better way to warm a winter night than with a concert. (652-5577, thegrandwilmington.org)

High-Spirited Theater

As British wits go, Noel Coward is one of the greats. Clear Space Theatre Company in Rehoboth Beach pays due homage with its production of Coward’s classic farce “Blithe Spirit.” The plot: While researching his next novel, socialite Charles Condomine hires Madame Arcati to mediate a séance, but she somehow summons the ghost of his dead wife, Elvira. Let’s just say Elvira is none too happy about Charles’ new wife. Watch the fur fly starting Feb. 3. (227-2270, clearspacetheatre.org)

Up and Away

Who exactly were the Tuskegee Airmen? We know they made up the first squadron of black military aviators, but, there’s far more to know. Learn it when retired Brig. Gen. Ernest George Talbert of the Delaware Air National Guard, a past president of the local Tuskegee Airmen association, makes a presentation at the Delaware Public Archives in Dover. Find out how the famous fliers rose to prominence and what the real significance of their achievements has been. “There’s a universality to their story, one of always attempting to do your best,” Talbert says. The free presentation happens Feb. 4 at 10:30 a.m. (744-5047, thomas.summers@state.de.us)
