There are great things to do this Labor Day weekend.
Ardening Season
Ah, we love the Arden Fair. And given the fact that this year marks its 102nd anniversary, we suspect others do, too. Keep your fingers crossed for a good weather day Saturday, September 5 (or Sunday, if it rains), because this year promises to be a nice mix of art, music and kids’ activities. As always, stands will be packed with handmade crafts by local artists, and lots of antiques you can’t seem to find elsewhere. And the fair offers a glimpse into the wonderfully eclectic and architecturally interesting Arden neighborhood, which is usually quite private. There will also be live music in the Shady Grove, children’s rides, food, and an art show featuring local sculptor David Burslem.
All proceeds benefit the Arden Gild Hall, which produces performing and visual arts events year-round, as well as educational offerings.

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and Ovations Restaurant & Lounge are joining forces to offer Cinema Cabaret. Indulge in a gourmet meal while watching “Big Night,” a film about people indulging in a gourmet meal.
Quick premise: Brothers Primo and Secondo, played by Tony Shalhoub and Stanley Tucci, respectively, own a quaint Italian spot called Paradise. They insist in producing authentic Italian food, and seem to be suffering because of it. That’s because the competitor and neighbor, Pascal’s, which specializes in Americanized Italian food, is getting all the business. The brothers invite a celebrity to the restaurant, garnering all sorts of publicity—just not the kind of publicity they wanted.
Ovations is preparing a three-course meal that includes the same fish entrée showcased in the film. This event promises a happy Tiramisu and coffee ending—for you, anyway. For the characters in the film: not so much.

Dover Doings
There are all sorts of cool things happening at Dover’s First State Heritage Park this weekend. Do the Lantern Tour of the Dover Green on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Guides will tell stories about Dover’s most notorious folk, spinning all kinds of yarns about murders, fires and jails.
If suspense isn’t your thing, you might enjoy the Victorian Architecture Tour on Saturday, which is highlighted by a stroll through the Victorian Dover National Register Historic District. Broad daylight. Not scary at all.
And have you ever seen a real Victrola? Dover’s Johnson Victrola Museum is hosting “Looking Back at Labor Day,” a full day of family activities on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum boasts the beautiful instruments, as well as memorabilia, objects, paintings, and a good pictorial about the development of the sound-recording industry.
