Want to celebrate Bastille Day like the French do this year? On July 14, Le Cavalier at the Green Room offers rich French-inspired dishes paired with natural wine and signature craft cocktails. Plus, guests can enjoy a celebratory cannon firing at the Hagley Museum.
Bastille Day is the National Day of France (think Fourth of July for the United States) which commemorates the storming of the Bastille—a medieval fortress that was turned into a state prison—and the unity of France. The building held political prisoners and detained citizens awaiting trial and then became a symbol for the Bourbon monarchy’s harsh rule. In 1789, a mob overthrew the Bastille, releasing the seven prisoners kept there and signaling the beginning of the French Revolution.
More locally, Le Cavalier is a modern French brasserie that celebrates Bastille Day right here in downtown Wilmington. This year’s celebration includes dishes such as a bavette steak brochette with tahini au poivre, shawarma chicken brochette with harissa chili crisp or trumpet mushroom brochette with pine nut tarator. Each dish is served with a red rice salad with Castelvetrano olives, pickled shallot, barberries and herbs, a warm flatbread or berry clafoutis with brown butter whipped cream.
Tickets are $35 per person and include admission, dinner from Le Cavalier and a special cannon firing.
