For years, Melanie Ross Levin drove back and forth from Washington to Dover for her work with the National Women’s Law Center. Now she lives in Wilmington, and her work with the state’s Office of Women’s Advancement and Advocacy is critical to help improve the lives of women and girls in Delaware.
Though she left D.C. behind, she still can’t resist always checking her phone—a habit she blames on her time in the capital. She believes equality in the workforce will come as more women attain careers at the highest levels, no matter what the field.
“Even in women-dominated jobs, women still tend to get passed over when it comes to the most senior positions in an organization,” she says. “This means less pay, a larger wage gap and ultimately less security during retirement. Equality won’t come when women are just working—women do that now and have for a long time. Equality will come when women—all women—are valued throughout the hierarchy of organizations and are paid fairly.”
