If you still haven’t made your way into the theater to catch Barbie or Oppenheimer, here’s your chance. On Sunday, August 27, movie tickets will be just $4 at theaters across Delaware in celebration of National Cinema Day.
With the release of powerhouse films Barbie and Oppenheimer late last month, things are looking up for the local and national film industry. Theaters in Delaware and beyond sold out screenings throughout opening weekend. If you’re curious to see if these films live up to the hype, a $4 ticket is the perfect opportunity.
National Cinema Day began just last year. On the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, movie theater attendance was at an all-time low. The Cinema Foundation created the National Cinema Day program to bring people back to the theaters. It’s a simple but effective concept: encourage people to buy tickets by selling them at a significant discount, and (hopefully) rebuild the habit of movie-going.
The 2022 project was a major success. According to the Cinema Foundation, National Cinema Day brought over eight million people to movie theaters across the country—more than any other day last year. An impressive 59% of those moviegoers say they began going more often since last year.
This is good news for Delaware. Even as a small state with only about 10 movie theaters, Delaware benefits from the film industry. Local theaters provide jobs and promote economic development. Local cinemas often partner with other area businesses to drive community engagement. Main Street Movies 5 in Newark, for example, stocks the concessions with cookies and snacks from Main Street businesses like Bing’s Bakery and Season’s Pizza.
Hopeful for a second successful run, the following cinemas in Delaware will offer $4 movie tickets to all showings on Sunday, August 27.
