With the new year comes new programming at the Newark Arts Alliance. Its 2016 schedule of exhibitions features, as always, art by local artists and a mix of themed shows, which are open to submissions, and solo-group shows. On display now through Jan. 30 is “Greek Tales Retold,” a solo exhibition by Newark resident Carole Huber. In 17 abstract works, Huber explores timeless Greek stories of heroism, suffering, lust and ecstasy. Hera, Poseidon, Ares and other Greek gods appear, along with depictions of the sack of Troy and the story of Leda and the swan. Most of the works are painted silk, rounded out by pieces done in acrylic, oil and mixed media on canvas. A handout is available in the exhibition gallery to provide background on the Greek myths that inspired the works.
“My ambition in these paintings is to make Greek myths resonate in surprising ways for people who have always loved them, and to introduce them to people who have yet to visit them,” Huber says. Huber is an oil painter who has shown in the Mid-Atlantic region and has paintings held in many private collections. She has a bachelor’s degree in art and a doctorate in English literature. She teaches at the Newark Arts Alliance and through Kennett Design, and she previously taught at the Gilbert W. Perry Center for the Arts in Middletown, where she was co-director of the Hudson Contemporary Gallery. About 20 years ago she founded the plein air group at University of Delaware’s Center for Lifelong Learning in Wilmington. She has shown paintings on silk and hand-painted silk scarves at Blue Streak Gallery in Wilmington and Mala Galleria in Kennett Square, and she maintains a studio at Art Space on Main in Elkton, Md.
Coming soon to the Newark Arts Alliance is “In Black and White” from Feb. 2–27, a juried exhibition of art in any media that is predominately black, white or black-and-white; “Art from Another Time” from March 1–April 2, a juried exhibition of art in any media that references the past or future; “Young at Art” from April 5–April 30, an exhibition of work in all media by artists in grades K–12; and more. The mission of the Newark Arts Alliance, a locally supported nonprofit organization, is to provide the citizens of greater Newark with the opportunity to explore and display their creativity, as well as to participate in cultural events that build community.
