Colonial History in New Castle

As the HGTV list points out, New Castle is a haven for American history buffs. Dating back to 1651, the town is one of the oldest settlements in the United States. Much of the historic infrastructure and architecture are well-preserved, thanks in part to a devoted historical society working to maintain historical sites, preserve buildings, and educate the public with museum tours and local events.

During guided tours of the historic Amstel House and the New Castle Court House Museum, visitors learn about local history that pre-dates the United States, including Delaware’s Revolutionary War efforts and the vote to declare independence from both Pennsylvania and Great Britain. At the Read House & Gardens, visitors can tour the preserved house of George Read II, son of Delaware lawyer and politician George Read, who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Along with historic sites in Historic New Castle, visitors will find the Kalmar Nyckel at the pier at various times throughout the year, offering day sails on the replica of the original ship that brought Swedish settlers to America. (Find the sailing schedule and tickets online.)

Dining and Entertainment

A stroll along the cobblestone streets or a walk through Battery Park are sure to sell visitors on the history-filled charm of Historic New Castle, but to dive further into this hidden gem, stop by some of the local restaurants for a hearty meal, pint of beer, or afternoon tea.

Jessop’s Tavern is a quintessential Historic New Castle experience. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, a lover of colonial history, or just in search of a hearty meal, Jessop’s is a must. Walk through the front door of this historic tavern and take a trip back in time with colonial decor, authentic European beer, and a colonial-inspired menu. For dinner, enjoy incredible pot pies, roasted duck, pot roast, sandwiches, and more. Or, indulge in a night cap from the extensive beer list offering everything from fruited sours to malty German brews. Finish the evening with a taste of ice cream made the old-fashioned way. The tavern sources its ice cream from the local Woodside Farm Creamery, known for meticulously crafting the sweet treat from start to finish right on the farm’s property.
