Inherit the Wind

“Inherit the Wind” is the story of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial that captured America at a very divisive time: A Tennessee teacher was arrested for teaching Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution in his classroom. Legends Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan squared off in the trial that centered on issues that, almost 100 years later, can still ignite the flames of contention. See it with the UD Resident Ensemble Players.

Master Players Concert Series: River of Freedom

This arts-integrated concert brings history to life through words by Caitlyn Kamminga, music by Adam Walters and art by Che Lovelace. “River of Freedom” is the tale of the journey of enslaved African-Americans who fought with the British in America’s Second War of Independence of 1812 in exchange for freedom and land in Trinidad. The work will be performed by Ibis Ensemble, a group made up of members of the music faculty of the University of Trinidad and Tobago. See it at Gore Recital Hall in Newark at 3 p.m.

Collecting as Activism: African American Art and the Legacy of Paul R. Jones

A collector and philanthropist, Paul R. Jones (1928-2010) began collecting art in the 1960s, focusing on acquiring works by African-American and African diaspora artists—artists, at the time, who were often marginalized and excluded from major museum collections. Through artworks from his collection, the exhibition invites visitors to ask questions about diversity, inclusion and visibility in art museums, as well as the role of collectors in supporting underrepresented artists.
