It’s a big, big weekend at The Freeman Stage at Bayside, one well worth a drive to Fenwick Island in holiday traffic—if you’re not there already. (Hint: Sneak in from U.S. 113.)
The fun starts Friday with “Words and Music—by Gershwin,” presented by Clear Space Theatre Company. Four performers stage six vignettes that explore the Gershwin song catalog as it changes through his career. You’ll recognize classics like “Embraceable You,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.” The show starts at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $10 per person. Children under 18 are admitted free.
Saturday morning features a performance by the Dirty Sock Funtime Band. The group bills itself as “infectious,” “irresistible” and “the highest energy kids’ rock band ever to break out of New York City.” Judge for yourself. The performance starts at 10 a.m., so you can beat the heat and still get in a long day on the beach. Best of all, it’s free.
The peak comes Saturday night, when conductor David Amado brings the Delaware Symphony Orchestra to the stage. Seeing the Grammy-nominated orchestra is always a treat, especially when you can do it under the stars. The concert starts at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $10. Children under 18 are admitted free.

Speaking of Clear Space…
The Rehoboth Beach-based theater group presents the first weekend of “Chicago” at the Clear Space Theatre on Baltimore Avenue. You know the story: A corrupt justice system turns a murderess in a celebrity criminal in the Roaring Twenties. See how the Clear Space cast works its “Razzle Dazzle” on the music and dance. The show runs concurrently with “100 years of Broadway” and “Words and Music—By Gershwin” through September. clearspacetheatre.org
This Just In
The American Association of Community Theater awarded Patrick Cathcart of Newark Best Actor for playing Jerry in “The Zoo Story” by Edward Albee. That’s a national award, folks, the first time Delaware has received a national award from AACT.
Patrick first played Jerry at Newark’s Chapel Street Playhouse in January, when audiences chose the play for the national competition. The award presentation happened Saturday night. “It feels fantastic,” says play director Andrew Mitchell of Bear. “We’ve placed second and third a lot. As far as what we do, this is a big, big deal.” Here’s a hearty congratulations to Patrick and Andrew.
The Teachers Behind the Art
Now at the Delaware Art Museum, see what kind of artists our public school art teachers are. “Creativity Multiplied” shows the work of 11 Christina School District teachers through August 21. View 27 paintings, photographs, drawings and sculptures as part of the museum’s Outlooks Exhibition Series to show how the teachers inspire their students.
