Charles Burchfield (1893-1967) was one of the leading American artists of the 20th century. Inspired by nature writers such as Henry David Thoreau, he painted vibrant, spirit-filled landscapes in watercolor. “Exalted Nature: The Real and Fantastic World of Charles Burchfield” at the Brandywine River Museum of Art will feature more than 50 works from public and private collections across the United States, providing a rare opportunity to examine the artist’s distinctive—some would say transcendental—vision of the world. See it Aug. 23-Nov. 16. (610) 388-2700, brandywinemuseum.org
