Soothing Sunday Sounds at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts

Plus: A classic car show, Beauty and the Beast ballet and an archaeology festival. Arts in Delaware

The exquisite Mélomanie chamber ensemble rounds out its 2013-14 season with a final performance at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts and a world premiere of “Buddleja Davidii” by composer Richard Belcastro. “The title ‘Buddleja Davidii’ refers to the beautiful summer plant, the butterfly bush,” says Mélomanie harpsichordist Tracy Richardson. “Richard Belcastro is a gardener, and he wrote his piece for Mélomanie with the beauty of the plant, butterflies and our instruments in mind. The harpsichord and sitar are soft, plucked instruments that draw the listener to them, much like the butterfly to the Buddleja Davidii.” Belcastro guests as sitarist, and since he’s there, Mélomanie will also perform Finger
Alla râga (from Clavier Book 3) for solo harpsichord by local composer Mark Hagerty, Richardson’s husband. You’ll also hear Sequenza VIII for solo violin by Luciano Berio, Sonata sesta in A Minor for viola da gamba and basso continuo by Gottfried, and Trio Sonata in D Major, Wq. 83, H. 505 for flute, violin and basso continuo by C.P.E. Bach. Discover this rare musical beauty on May 11. Check out melomanie.org. This is a group you do not want to miss.
