Hear Them Roar
Behind every great man stands a woman? Puh-leese.
Let’s try this: Beside every great woman stands a man. Sometimes he’s a great man. (Like the men connected to the women discussed below.)
So, three great women—Carla Markell, Martha Carper and Jane Castle—epitomize this more modern concept. All three will be on hand for “Campaigns, Canapés and Chicken Dinners: A Conversation with Delaware First Ladies,” on Thursday, November 5, at the DuPont Country Club.
The event, courtesy of the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation, features what I expect will be an interesting conversation between Markell, Carper and Castle. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting these women, and each is gracious and engaging. There will likely be candid and poignant conversation, as well as some lighthearted chat. The women will discuss what it’s like to be married to a governor or senator. And let’s face it. You have to have a sense of humor and a tough skin to survive life in politics.
Nancy Karibjanian, former anchor for WHYY-TV 12’s “Delaware Tonight,” is moderator. Nancy has her own stories to tell.
An auction will offer gift baskets and spa packages, sporting events tickets, restaurant gift certificates, jewelry, specialty gifts, gourmet foods and more. Food stations will provide light supper fare. Expect a cash bar.
Proceeds go to a good cause. The Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation, the charitable arm of Wilmington Women in Business, helps fund educational opportunites for women in need. Tickets are $55, but $25 of that is tax deductible.

Cool Coat, Joseph!
The New Candlelight Theatre opens its holiday show this weekend. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” plays thru December 20.
This one’s a classic. Created by the megastar team of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice (“Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita”), this musical tells the Old Testament tale of Joseph, who falls out of favor with his 11 jealous brothers, who in turn sell him into slavery.
Joseph isn’t easily deterred. The brothers actually set into motion a string of events that lead Joseph to become the Pharaoh’s second-in-command.
This show is great for families, especially for the holidays. Then again, is there really a wrong time to celebrate hope, faith and forgiveness?
