A League of Their Own
If you missed the first weekend of the Rehoboth Art League’s 2011 Outdoor Art Show, don’t miss this one, Aug. 20-21. The show is one of the best in the area, a perfect summer event made better for the simple fact that you can roam the art league’s 3.5 acres, The Homestead, in Henlopen Acres, an oasis at the beach. More than 100 artists in several mediums are participating. While you’re there, buy a commemorative T-shirt to raise funds for a permanent collection of work by longtime member and teacher Howard Schroeder. The money could hardly go to a worthier cause. A Premier Production
Who can resist “Hairspray,” the musical story of Tracy Turnblad’s dream of dancing on “The Corny Collins Show” and her overnight celebrity, which she uses to integrate the show? Seeing Infrared
If by now you aren’t familiar with infrared photography, see it up at close at the Delaware Division of the Arts Mezzanine Gallery, where Mickey Freed’s “Brandywine Lumenarium” hangs until Aug. 26. The show includes 16 infrared images of the valley, some with a mystical quality, all beautiful. Freed is inspired by the black-and-white nature photography of Ansel Adams, Minor White and Edward Weston. Some of The artist’s images tend, Freed has said, “toward surreal nature photography, with an emphasis on the relationship between earth and sky; clouds used as echoes of other events in the landscape. The images attempt to grasp the ‘higher reality of certain forms of associations,’ to quote Andre Breton, and to record moments that transcend our awareness of our everyday surroundings…” See them, and be transported. The gallery is on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French St. in Wilmington.
