Delaware Friends of Folk will host the annual Delmarva Folk Hero Contest August 21. The winner, chosen by the audience, will advance to the finalists round, in hopes of performing at the 2010 Delmarva Folk Festival October 1.

For many local performers, the contest is a chance to be heard. It leverages both the Friends of Folk coffeehouse series with the Delmarva Folk Festival. And several headliners of the fest were once folk hero winners.

After candidates perform, ballots are distributed to the audience. The best performer is dubbed the 2010 Delmarva Folk Hero and offered a prize package that includes cash, an invitation to appear on WSTW, recording studio time and a professional photo shoot.

The contest is fun to watch, but it’s also an inexpensive way to hear folk music performed by excellent singers. (Admission is $5.) The contest, as well as all FOF coffeehouses, will be held at Wesley Chapel in Dover.
