Celebrate Beethoven’s birthday Dec 16-17 with a performance of his five Sonatas for Piano and Cello at The Music School of Delaware. Join cellist Lawrence Stomberg and pianist Neal Kurz, an alumnus of the school, at 7 p.m. each evening, followed by a birthday party for Beethoven, complete with delicious food, cold beer and cake. Tickets are $15 for both nights, or $9 for students and seniors. A single night ticket is $10 for adults, or $5 for students and seniors. Stomberg says the two-concert series will traverse 20 years, between the first two sonatas, Op. 5, and the last two, Op. 102. Add the beloved middle sonata, Op. 69, and follow the context of Beethoven’s life and time. “Along with his string quartets and piano sonatas, no other works of Beethoven’s show the evolution of his compositional style, from the firebrand Classical youngster to the revolutionary and experimental composer ushering in a new era,” says Stomberg. Following the concert, a beer garden will feature three Delaware breweries. Twin Lakes Brewing Company will be pouring both nights. Fordham & Dominion Brewing Company of Dover will pour Tuesday and Argilla Brewing Company of Newark will pour Wednesday. Lawrence Stomberg serves on the faculty at the Music School’s Wilmington Branch and is a member of the Serafin String Quartet. His three children study piano, flute and violin, and his wife, cellist Jennifer Crowell Stomberg serves as head of the string department at the Music School. He is also a faculty member for the department of music at the University of Delaware. Neal Kurz serves on the accompanying staff at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. He earned degrees at the Eastman School of Music and University of Michigan. An alumnus of the Music School, Kurz was a student of David Brown, piano, and Karen Ahramjian, cello.
