If I had a dime for every time somebody said they’d never been to the Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village, I’d have a few extra bucks in my pocket.
Typically someone will say, “I’ve driven past it, but I’ve never actually gone in.”
The museum is a cool place, especially for anyone claiming to be a Delawarean. It’s there to preserve the very quickly fading agricultural heritage of Delaware and the Delmarva Peninsula. Check out the warehouse full of tractors and steam engines. You can’t ride them, but they’re incredible to see. The kids are pretty amazed to learn what hard labor really is … or was.
Outside, at Loockerman Landing Village, staffers have created a rural village from the 1890s, complete with a general store, a farmhouse with the table set for the evening meal, a schoolhouse and a chapel. Couples actually marry in the chapel—it’s that quaint.
In addition to myriad exhibits, the museum will host the Delaware Heritage Commission’s Authors’ Day November 6. Forty local authors will present and sign their books to the public for this free event. (Think holiday gifts.) The books range from history, romance, children’s books, spiritual, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, war, paper dolls, and other subjects.
Think of this as a two-for-one gig: the book sale and a visit to that place you keep driving by.
