What a Circus

The Grand will be transformed into a big top when Cirque Productions joins the Delaware Symphony Orchestra’s season opener.

Few Delawareans have seen fire-eaters swallow flames to Prokofiev’s “Midnight Waltz from Cinderella.” Nor have they witnessed acrobats perform death-defying feats to Mozart. This month they can, during The Delaware Symphony Orchestra’s season opener, “The Night of All Nights: The Cirque is Coming to Town,” September 13. DSO has joined with Cirque Productions to create a unique show of contortion, juggling, strength and more with music chosen by maestro David Amado. “Each act creation is carefully scripted and engineered to present a balance of art, music and momentum with theatrical expertise,” says Shirley Crane of Cirque. Says Amado, “The idea that we can combine what we do with these incredible artists and athletes out in the front of the stage will make for an unbelievably memorable evening, a real spectacle.” The Grand’s entrance will become a circus tent. Inside you’ll encounter distortion mirrors and roasted peanuts. “It’ll be a circus from the minute you arrive till the minute you leave,” says DSO executive director Lucinda Williams. “Yes it’s a circus, but this one’s for big people.” For more, visit desymphony.org or call 656-7442. —Maria Hess

Catch “Menopause the Musical” at the DuPont Theatre September 26-28.Hot Flashes of Brilliance

Women everywhere are praising the joys of menopause—the musical, that is. Manager John Gardner has bravely booked “Menopause the Musical” at the DuPont Theatre September 26-28. The show has been a raging success around the world and men who get dragged into theaters actually enjoy themselves, says author and producer Jeanie Linders. “It makes them realize they’re not living with total maniacs.” The 90-minute show is set in a department store, where four menopausal women argue over girdles. Via  25 pop tunes with tweaked lyrics, the ladies bemoan hot flashes, memory loss, mood swings, night sweats and chocolate cravings, then laugh it off. Audience members leave enlightened, and some have been heard humming the tunes while exiting. Sing to the melody of “My Guy:” “Nothin’ I can do cause it sticks like glue to my thighs.” “Let’s face it, it’s not Macbeth,” says Linders. “But women get it.”
