What to Do at the Beach This Weekend: June 9–11, 2017

A fun cocktail competition, yoga under the moon, lots of live music and more.

 

This weekend, you can twirl to music from the ’80s, stroll through rows of sweet-smelling lavender bushes and get a close-up look at not just one but two lighthouses. Take a peek at what’s on the calendar.

 

Milton

Lavender Festival

What: Celebrate the start of harvest season with live music, lavender lemonade, lavender ice cream, burgers and hotdogs. Don’t forget to visit the expanded Lavender Fields Cottage, a boutique with handmade soaps and lavender products.

Milton Farmers Market

What: It doesn’t get much better than fresh produce, live music and Dogfish Head beer—a winning way to start the weekend.
When: Fridays, through Sept. 29, 3–6 p.m.

Lewes

History Happy Hour: “1776 Delmarva”

What: Listen to author Phil Webster, who writes and speaks about the founding fathers. Then pop into The Rose & Crown for a pint.
When: Friday, June 9, 4–5 p.m.

Ginger

What: Musicians Nancy Micciulla, Dale Loeser and Mike Curry’s dance band play Motown, pop, rock and disco.

Lighthouse Sunset Cruise

What: Cruise up the canal and into the bay for a view of the Harbor of Refuge and the Breakwater lighthouses.
When: Saturday, June 10, at 7 p.m. (rain date is June 11); $35. (Also on July 22 at 6:30 p.m., and Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m.)

Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach VegFest

What: A series of veg-friendly events to raise awareness for healthy, sustainable and compassionate living. The free festival has music, food, vendors and kids’ activities.
When: Friday, June 9–Sunday, June 11. The main event is on June 10, from 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
Where: The main event is at Epworth United Methodist Church.

Beach Goes Blue – Red & White Too!

What: Join the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Chamber of Commerce and USO Delaware’s salute to police, firemen, paramedics, military and others who serve. The event includes music at the bandstand by the USO Show Troupe and the U.S. Navy Band Country Current, a coordinated light show and the John M. Scharp Memorial Geck-Go 5K run/walk.
When: Saturday, June 10, from 8 a.m. (race) to 10:30 p.m. (light show).
Where: Various sites around Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach.


Cocktail Competition

What: Delaware bartenders compete for “Top Cocktail” honors using Dogfish Head Distilling Co. spirits. The winning cocktail will be batched and bottled for purchase by Dogfish Head Distilling Co. at Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Chesapeake & Maine and Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats. Event proceeds and bottle sales will support Cape Henlopen Education Foundation (CAPE).
When: Sunday, June 11, 5–8 p.m.

Dewey Beach

Full Moon Yoga and Bonfire

What: Do your sun salutations to the full moon instead when Dewey Beach Yoga takes to the sand. Bring a towel, water and, if you wish, a drum or rattle. You’ll also need $20—cash or credit.
When: Friday, June 9, 8 p.m.
Where: Dickinson Street


Saved by the ‘90s

What: Party like it’s 1999 with this New York City-based cover band.
When: Friday, June 9. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10. (Attendees must be at least 21.)

The Rockets

What: One of the beach’s favorite bands takes the stage at the “Rudder.” Local favorites Ed Shockley and Keith Mack will entertain the dinner crowd.
When: Sunday, June 11, at 9 p.m. (Shockley and Mack go on at 5 p.m.)

Beach Bonfire

What: Join the staff of Delaware Seashore State Park for a blazing beach fire and toasted marshmallows.
When: Tuesdays, 8:30–10 p.m.
Where: The park’s north inlet beach.


Bethany Beach

The Jimmies

What: The ’80s rock tribute band amps up by the beach.
When: Saturday, June 10, 7–9 p.m.
Where: Bethany Beach Bandstand


“Under”

What: The play unveils a secret underground city built in the 1950s. This is the home of celebrities who faked their death to escape the drawbacks of fame.
When: Sunday, June 11–Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m.; $10–$15
Where: Dickens Parlour Theatre, a performing arts venue in nearby Millville.


Fenwick Island

Salted Vines Vineyard and Winery

What: Formerly Fenwick Wine Cellars, this winemaker changed its name with a move to Frankford near West Fenwick last year. It’s an easy excursion from the coast. Try the June Bugito, a blueberry wine mojito.
When: Fridays for Friday Night Flights; Saturday, June 10, 4–7 p.m. for music by 16 String Band.

Our Harvest

What: John Trader, the owner of Liquid Assets in Ocean City, has crossed the state line to open this restaurant in the former Claddagh On the Shore. The menu pays tribute to farmers, growers, cheesemakers, watermen and winemakers. Choose from “littles” (bites for one), “smalls” (suitable for sharing) and “feasts” (designed for two).
When: Opens at 5 p.m. for dinner (no reservations accepted)
