The 32nd season of the Delaware Chamber Music Festival (DCMF) begins tonight, Friday, June 16, at a new location: Wilmington Friends Lower School. The 2017 DCMF puts some of Brahms’ greatest chamber works in perspective with Modern, Hungarian, French, Classical and Romantic pairings.
Members of the Philadelphia Orchestra collaborate with some of the area’s most beloved and celebrated pianists and get “jazzy” with new works “written on them” by the young musicians of the summer Jazz Residency Project directed by Jonathan Whitney. The fun begins with “Strings and Keys: A Mini Brahms Celebration” featuring his Piano Quartet in G major, preceded by Jennifer Higdon’s Pale Yellow and Fiery Red for Piano Trio and ErnÅ‘ Dohnányi’s Serenade for String Trio performed by Marcantonio Barone and Julie Nishimura, piano; Barbara Govatos, violin; and Clancy Newman, cello. Sunday’s performance features Poulenc’s Sonata for violin and piano and Brahms’ Piano Trio in C major.
The Festival Quartet—Barbara Govatos, Hirono Oka, Burchard Tang, Clancy Newman and Marcantonio Barone—will perform Beethoven, Stravinsky and Brahms on Friday, June 23. The festival ends June 25 with a program of Mozart, Korngold and Brahms. But before it does, there will be a free performance by the Jazz Residency Collaboration on June 24 at the Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew. Admission for the other shows is $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for students.
