A Driving Force

Police campaign focuses on driver safety.

The Newark Police Department is in the midst of a campaign to make Newark as safe a place to drive as it is to walk.

The Collision Reduction Initiative focuses on the places where collisions are occurring most often, as well as the violations that result in accidents.

“Our police officers are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all who live in, work in and visit the city of Newark, as evidenced by a 48 percent reduction in crime since 2006,” says city manager Carol Houck. “This initiative will build on their efforts and raise awareness among drivers regarding the need to remain attentive while behind the wheel.”

Chief of police Paul Tiernan says the program’s goal is to enhance safety, not to write tickets. In addition to enforcing traffic laws, the police will focus on educating drivers.

Enforcement locations are posted regularly on Facebook and Twitter. Follow the initiative’s progress at #JustDriveNewark and @NewarkDelawarePoliceDepartment.

On Aug. 2, Newark Police Department, along with UD Police and Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company, will host the second annual National Night Out on Academy Street from 6-9 p.m. The event, held nationally, is another way in which the department builds relationships with the community.

The evening will feature demonstrations,  food, games and live entertainment.
