Stone Balloon Tavern and Concert Hall opened its doors in February 1972 and rapidly became, as Playboy magazine once noted, “one of the 100 top college bars in America.” A staple for University of Delaware students from then until its closing in 2005, “The Balloon” still draws fans to its Facebook fan page as well as to reunion parties, which crop up each year around this time.
While the Stone Balloon Ale House, which opened in January 2015, shares a name and location with the original, there is no live music or $1 drafts. Instead, the new Stone Balloon features a unique blend of crafted food, exceptional beer, classic cocktails redefined and an array of spirits—all flavored with a dash of nostalgia.
Celebrating both the old and the new, Stone Balloon Ale House will host a 44th birthday celebration for the original Stone Balloon on Sunday, Feb. 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. Bill Stevenson, founder of the Stone Balloon Tavern & Concert Hall, will be on site to sign (or re-sign) his book on the early history of the Stone Balloon. Enjoy a roasted pig buffet and bring an old Stone Balloon 12-ounce mug to get $4 select craft drafts during the event. Arrive early and enjoy weekend happy hour specials from 2 to 5 p.m.
