Audrey K. Doberstein and Jack P. Varsalona, Wilmington University

Audrey K. Doberstein, former president of Wilmington College

Dr. Doberstein’s leadership of then-Wilmington College had a tremendous impact on students and professionals aspiring to hold a leadership position in the field of education. As the first and only female to preside over a four-year college in Delaware, she broke barriers among women in higher education. All of us here, as well as many in the community, feel honored to have been part of her vision to provide a quality and affordable education to anyone with the dream of a college degree. She understood and embraced the fact that our priority is to serve our students. More than that, she recognized that often the business of education goes beyond the teachings from lectures and textbooks. We have an obligation to prepare our students for life lessons as well. —Jack Varsalona, president, Wilmington University

Jack P. Varsalona, president of Wilmington University

Under Dr. Varsalona, the college moved to university status, which had a positive impact on everyone associated with it—past, present and future. One of Jack’s greatest strengths is his ability to predict what students, businesses, institutions and society in general will come to expect from higher education. Jack’s efforts to provide access have been overwhelmingly successful. The university has opened locations in New Jersey and Maryland. The growth of online learning has provided opportunities for tens of thousands across the country and for military members in other parts of the world. Because of Jack and the commitment of those who believe in the university, many have improved their lives and the lives of their families. As a result, more people are committed to making our communities, our state and our nation a better place. —Audrey K. Doberstein, former president, Wilmington College
