Benchmark Builders

For more than a quarter-century, astute homebuyers in Delaware have learned to look toward Benchmark Builders for an unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship and customer care.

Founded in 1988, Benchmark has sold and delivered more than 2,000 homes, primarily in the northern part of the state. The company began with a focus on active adults, building a series of communities for the 55-and-up buyer.

But the recession of 2008 and the burst of the housing bubble taught Benchmark a valuable lesson, one that benefits buyers across the age and income spectrums. “We learned that it’s important to diversify,” president and CEO Matt Egan says, “so now we focus on three markets—active adults, first-time homebuyers and move-up buyers.”

Benchmark’s footprint currently stretches from Wilmington to Smyrna, with an inventory that includes townhomes, single-family homes, carriage houses and 55-plus communities. A frequent winner of awards from the Homebuilders Association of Delaware, Benchmark is also one of four members of the “Builders’ Guild” at the Town of Whitehall, the new mixed-use community now under construction just south of the C&D Canal.

“We’re truly a part of the communities where we build,” Egan says. “Our employees live and work in the area and we strive to participate in community activities.” Those activities include the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign, home builds organized by Habitat for Humanity and activities sponsored by Faithful Friends animal shelters.

Every day, Benchmark superintendents and project managers check each home under construction for quality, making sure it’s being built according to plan.

“We hold ourselves to a higher standard,” Egan says. “We’re proud of our A-plus rating from the BBB, and we want to keep it.”
