Breakfast Sandwich Pit Stops Feature More Than Just Typical Fare

It’s not just about the typical bagel-egg-meat combo (though we’re not complaining when it is). Throw some chorizo, spinach and hoagie rolls in the mix for an unforgettable sammie.

When Toscana to Go reopened in Trolley Square  in January, it welcomed customers with two perks: more spacious digs next to big sis Piccolina Toscana and new breakfast sandwiches. Consider the “Ricco,” made with pancetta, egg, fontina, and arugula on brioche, or the “Energia,” a tortilla packed with egg whites, roasted peppers, spinach, provolone and white beans.

For many people, a respectable breakfast sandwich contains meat. There’s the expected, of course. At the Crystal Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, customers can get an egg-and-cheese sandwich with bacon, ham, sausage or scrapple.

Café Azafran in Lewes, which sports a Mediterranean theme, substitutes chorizo for sausage. At nearby Surf Bagel on Del. 1, meat selections include Taylor Ham—aka Taylor Pork Roll to baby boomers. As for the bagels, customers get sandwiches with just about everything, even blueberry and cinnamon and raisin.

As Surf Bagel shows, not all sandwiches include traditional bread. The Point Coffee House in Rehoboth Beach is popular for its croissant-based sandwiches. There are three kinds: egg, ham and cheese; egg, spinach and Swiss cheese; and egg, sausage and cheese. Pair your favorite with a steaming cup of coffee, made from beans roasted on site.

At Dirty Harry’s Restaurant in Fenwick Island, breakfast sandwiches come on everything from croissants to Kaiser rolls to biscuits. They have professional baker on site, which is why you should indulge in a gooey-sweet cinnamon roll for “dessert.”

Meghan’s in Glen Mills, Pa., fills a 6-inch hoagie roll with eggs, ham, onion and peppers. Or you can get it with steak and eggs for a protein-packed breakfast to go.

Increasingly, restaurants with a creative twist are bringing the hamburger to brunch. Consider Abbott’s Grill in Milford, whose “Megatron Burger” is topped with scrapple and a fried egg.

Seafood also gets the upscale treatment. Blue Moon in Rehoboth Beach gives the humble BLT a breakfast boost with its house-smoked salmon BLT, which is layered onto a ciabatta.

For a healthy twist, Newark Deli and Bagels offers egg whites and turkey among the usual fare. Top it with tomato or turkey.
