Most nonprofits hold fundraising campaigns before they begin capital improvements. Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore believes that, if improvements are needed, they shouldn’t wait until all the funds are raised. I So, in the past year or so, the organization spent about $6.5 million on improvements to Camp Fairlee, its recreation and respite facility near Chestertown, Md. The work includes four new residential cabins, a dining hall expansion, a 12,000-square-foot activity center and a new health center. I As a measure of its own confidence, Easter Seals used $2 million of its endowment funds to get the project started. Now, CAMPaign Fairlee is under way, with a goal of raising the remaining $4.5 million. By mid-August, businesses and foundations had contributed more than $3.6 million, leaving less than $1 million to go as the campaign enters its public phase.
