In New York State, only the five Native American facilities (categorized as Class III) can offer full casino gaming (live table games in addition to slots) and operate around the clock. All are located upstate. There are also nine “racinos,” where you can bet on horse racing and at video lottery terminals and electronic table games. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has put forth a proposal to permit other resort casinos with full gaming facilities to operate in the state, though formal legislation for this proposal had not yet been introduced to the legislature at press time.
Batavia Downs Gaming hosts live harness racing every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through August. You can also bet on simulcast racing from North America’s premier tracks seven days a week.
Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack in Farmington has begun construction on a $12-million, 33,000-square-foot expansion that will add more than 300 video-lottery terminals, a sit-down dining alternative to the current buffet, and a lounge/bar with a 16-foot HD projection screen and 22 TVs.
Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino in downtown Buffalo is undergoing a $130-million redesign this summer, replacing the slots-only facility opened in 2007 with a new building containing more than 800 slots, 16 table games and a small restaurant and bar. The new casino is scheduled to debut in the fall. In the meantime, play continues at the original facility.
