Targets: Deep folds, creases, recessed scars, hollow areas and furrows
Procedure: Restylane, Juvéderm and Perlane contain hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in the body’s tissues. The heavier Radiesse is made with calcium hydroxyapatite. Today, most fillers include a numbing agent, so an injection of a local anesthetic might not be necessary. (Indeed, some find the local more painful than the filler injection, Dellose notes.) Some practitioners like to completely numb the sensitive lip area; while others believe it could hinder the ability to judge just how much of the material is enough. The brand choice depends on the doctor’s preference and the task at hand. (They have different consistencies and particle sizes.)
Time: Up to a half hour, although numbing agents will add to the time.
Recovery: Possible redness, swelling and bruising. Malek says fillers with hyaluronic acid are “very well accepted.” It may take a year or two to absorb and disappear.”
