The new: Temptation waits around every corner in Lewes, long home to King’s Ice Cream. Now there’s also Cake Bar (115 Second St., 645-2253, sugarbakerscakes.com) which opened this season. A sister location to SugarBakers Cakes near Baltimore, Cake Bar is known for its Smith Island cake, nine layers of yellow cake with fudge and peanut butter cup filling.
Coffee cake flavors include regular sour cream, apple and peach. “They are all so moist and perfect for breakfast or brunch,” says manager Jordan Ferger, whose mom owns SugarBakers. “Our apple pie cheesecake is to die for. We make our own cheesecake, which is a New York-style, and add apple pie filling to it. In the fall, we do pumpkin pie cheesecake, which is my favorite.”
In Bethany, Ruthie Parramore opened Ruthie’s Bethany Beach Bakery (115 Garfield Parkway, 539-1119). Parramore honed her baking skills at nearby Bethany Blues.
The tried-and-true: Joyce and John Michalek were lured to Rehoboth Beach from Elmer, N.J., by a customer who insisted they’d do better in Rehoboth. More than 10 years later, The Bake Shoppe (222 Rehoboth Ave., 226-0176) is celebrated for its Polish babka, a sweet roll made with cheese and other flavors and split-cream donuts, puffy donuts rolled in powdered sugar and sliced open to pack in the sweet filling. Mini-cakes satisfy a craving without packing on the pounds.
