At DMA, a full-time Navy ROTC program aims to set the tone for a safe, enjoyable learning environment that allows staff to focus on academics and character development.
“It’s not that we teach military philosophy, but that we use military philosophy to teach,” says cofounder and Head of School Jack Wintermantel. “The military has a strong value system to develop integrity, citizenship, service, self-discipline, responsibility, personal fitness, patriotism, leadership, teamwork and self-esteem. It’s a tall order but it works.
Integral to the life of the school are community service, weekly formation, uniform inspections, and monthly Seahawk awards for model students. The school has no entrance exam but the curriculum is college preparatory: There is no general education track. The vast majority of graduates go on to college, but those who join the military enter two pay grades higher than other recruits.
Did you know: DMA has the lowest discipline rate among Delaware’s public schools, and a wait list nearly twice the freshman class size. (Priority is given to in-district students.)
