A Wheel Good Time

The ninth annual Celebrity Chefs’ Beach Brunch supports Meals on Wheels Delaware, which provides nutritious food for seniors. Wheels might have come in handy at this boffo fundraiser because the 650-plus patrons needed roller skates to make it to more than 40 fabulous tasting stations at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey Beach.

“This is the best party in Sussex County,” says John Wolfle, chairman of the Oct. 2 shindig. “We have great restaurants and they have really stepped up to the plate, so to speak.”

Henlopen City Oyster House poured it on with a Bloody Mary Bar, where patrons could add such creative accompaniments as homemade pickles and fresh fennel.

Sara Tammany and Carole Levitsky of First State Appraisals in Rehoboth Beach, longtime sponsors, toasted the turnout with Dogfish Head beer for Tammany and Chandon bubbly for Levitsky.

“We love it that the brunch is in the fall because it’s the most beautiful time of year at the beach,” Levitsky says. “Be sure to tell people to come to the beach in autumn.”

Consider it done.

Rosemary Farley, chairwoman at Farley Printing Co., headed to the beach to put a toe in the waters of retirement, although she still spends time at the business in Wilmington. At brunch, the print that commanded the most attention was her stylish outfit, which combined blocks of color with insets of leopard.

“I’m here to support Meals on Wheels—but I certainly appreciate that there is lots of wonderful food,” she says.

Indeed. Luca Ristorante in Millsboro wowed tasters by offering a whole suckling pig. Nage in Reho pleased palates with butternut squash cheesecake with walnut pecan tuiles. Kate and Karla Crossan of Townsend gave two forks up to decadent bread pudding French toast from Baywood Clubhouse in Long Neck.

Susan Morissette of Lewes, a devoted gourmand, nibbled her way from chocolate cake to oysters to oxtails.

“I really love food,” she said, between bites, pronouncing the liver and onions from Betty’s in Reho “to die for.”
