Delaware Today magazine In Wilmington special supplement: Christiana Care Health System’s $210 million expansion of Wilmington Hospital

Christiana Care’s $210 million expansion of Wilmington Hospital includes new medical offices and more private rooms.

Just What the Doctor Ordered

With more than 10,000 employees, Christiana Care Health System is Delaware’s largest private employer. So it seems fitting that the company would expand its reach in the state’s largest city.

Christiana Care began a $210 million expansion of Wilmington Hospital in 2009, with the project expected to be completed in 2014. The expansion will add 340,000 square feet to the hospital. Highlights include new operating rooms and a four-story tower with 30 private rooms on each floor.

As chief medical officer for Christiana Care, Dr. Janice Nevin is excited to see the benefits that the expansion will bring. “This renovation is truly about the needs of the community,” she says. “We know how important the hospital is for local residents. Our emergency department averages 55,000 visits each year and our beds were getting full. Even though our current emergency department is larger than many of those in Philadelphia, we recognized the need for more room.”

Another major benefit of the upgrade, says Nevin, is the construction of a new medical office building that will allow patients to receive treatment and lab work and have procedures performed all in the same place.

Says Nevin, “It gives all of us here a chance to better serve a community that has supported us from the start.”
