Delaware Today magazine Women in Business: Sarah Willoughby is executive director of the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau

If you’ve heard little about the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau, it’s because its most visible efforts happen far from Wilmington, where it tries to persuade people to visit northern Delaware. “We are only a tank full away from 23 million people,” notes the head of those initiatives, executive director Sarah Willoughby. More visitors translates to more jobs and tax revenue, therefore a better quality of life for all Delawareans, she says. One of her most successful efforts was luring CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg to the state to tape segments for his Web site and radio show last year—and you’d better believe his 40,000 Twitter followers knew it. A job that depends on a high degree of networking has its perks, Willoughby says: “I have a huge extended family.”
