As office manager for Kerns Brothers Tree Service & Landscaping, Susan J. Kerns is the de facto manager of human resources for the company, making her responsible for helping the business grow and trimming dead wood. That includes overseeing training and other needs for the family-owned company’s 25 employees and coordinating advertising and networking efforts. Her contributions have paid off by earning Kerns Brothers the Greening Education Award from the Delaware Center for Horticulture, the Marvin S. Gilman Award for Business Excellence, The Better Business Bureau’s prestigious Torch Award and other honors. Awards are nothing new to Kerns—before she retired after 32 years as an educator in the Colonial School District, she was named teacher of the year.
