When Wilmington Mayor Dennis
Williams or 1st District State Rep. Charles Potter jones for homegrown soul food, they turn to Evelyn Johnson.
Famous for her fish fries—be it tilapia, whiting, catfish or trout—as well as fried chicken wings, yams and potato salad, Johnson has run the King Street kitchen for almost five years.
Battered and fried to perfection, using only the freshest fish fillets, Evelyn’s fried fish has garnered many fans in the city, from her army of regulars to several high-ranking city and state officials. “They give us five stars most of the time,” she says. “Fresh fish just tastes different than frozen, and a lot of places do frozen.”
