ABC Delaware members showcase their work each year in the Excellence in Construction Awards Program

A & H Metals 

In the specialty category of ornamental metals, an Excellence is presented to A & H Metals for the University of Delaware Caesar Rodney Residence & Dining Hall. A & H is proud to have performed the ornamental metal work for the new Academy Street dining and residence hall, adding to the beauty of the project and enhancing the dining and living experiences for the students.

Assurance Media

Assurance Media is presented with an Excellence in the specialty category of security, AV and structured cabling for the MOT Charter High School. In just a three-month timeframe, Assurance Media installed over 32 miles of voice and data cabling and over 220 devices around the school, giving students the safety of robust security systems and the best educational technology available today.

Color Works Painting 

An Excellence is awarded to Color Works Painting for the Conrail Belt, Loop & South track line railroad bridge in the specialty category of industrial coatings. The project required application of two different PennDOT Bulletin 15 coating systems while working with stringent outside inspectors. The project, located in Philadelphia, weighs a total of 750 tons.

 

 

Eastern Industrial Services

An Excellence in the category of specialty multi-crafts (thermal insulation, scaffolding and coatings) is presented to Eastern Industrial Services for Kuehune Chemical.  Eastern Industrial delivered insulation, scaffolding and coatings services supporting a significant new construction effort by Kuehne. All work was performed safely, on time and under budget while working under tight time constraints in congested conditions.

 

 

County Group Companies

In the specialty category of hazardous remediation, County Group Companies is awarded an Excellence for Occidental Chemical. This EPA high-priority site presented many challenges. Numerous contaminants, a high-heat environment and extreme height combined to make this one of the highest safety concern sites County Group has performed. The job was completed with no injuries.

 

 

Nason Construction

In the GC/CM $10 million-$15 million category, the Excellence is presented to Nason Construction for the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing. The new school creates a beautiful, realistic learning environment for Beebe Healthcare’s students while utilizing advanced and modern observation technology and motivating graduates to continue to live and work in Delaware.

 

 

Nickle Electrical Companies 

An Excellence is presented to Nickle Electrical Companies in the electrical $2 million-$10 million category for the Delaware State University OSCAR Lab. The 28,090-square-foot Optical Science Center for Applied Research is a new and unique triangular-shaped building on the Delaware State University campus in Dover. Optic research, and those with expertise in the field, is in high demand.

 

 

Nickel Electrical Companies 

In the electrical under-$2 million category, an Excellence is awarded to Nickle Electrical Companies for the new 20,000-square-foot performing arts center at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Md. It includes a 1,200-seat auditorium, stage, two levels of fixed seating, an orchestra pit, dressing rooms, concession area and box office.

 

 

Nowland Associates 

In the GC/CM under-$2 million category, an Excellence is presented to Nowland Associates for the Oxford Public Library. The library hired Nowland Associated to resurrect an expansion project that had been stalled due to budget overruns. Completion of this successful design/build project has given renewed life to an aging facility that will benefit the community for decades.

 

 

Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons 

Ralph G. Degli Obizzi & Sons is awarded an Excellence in the mechanical $2 million-$10 million category for the University of Delaware Caesar Rodney Residence & Dining Hall. Quality control was very important. A team from UD, Whiting-Turner and all subcontractors was required to discuss the job every other week to identify deficiencies and make recommendations to provide a better product. This helped eliminate a long punch list at the end of the project.

 

 

RC Fabricators 

RC Fabricators received the Excellence in the specialty category of steel fabrication and erection for Laurel Middle & High School. This new facility will accommodate 1,400 future graduates split between the middle and high school. With over 1,100 tons of steel and 200,000-square-foot layout has provided the best of both worlds for students and teachers.

 

 

Richard Y. Johnson & Son 

Richard Y. Johnson & Son is presented an Excellence in the GC/CM $50 million-and-over category. This new  210,000-square-foot school was construction adjacent to an occupied school under difficult weather conditions. Richard Y. Johnson worked closely with the owner and design team to coordinate activities on site safely and efficiently while delivering the project under budget.

 

 

SC & A Construction 

SC & A Construction is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $5 million-$10 million category for the Wilmington Country Club. The clubhouse expansion and renovation project, which faced with many challenges throughout the duration, resulted in a beautifully renovated facility that exceeded the expectations of all involved.

 

 

Wayman Fire Protection 

In the specialty category of fire sprinkler/alarm system, Wayman Fire Protection is awarded an Excellence for the University of Delaware Caesar Rodney Residence & Dining Hall. The fire suppression system includes both commercial and residential applications installed on sloped ceilings in state-of-the-art spaces. These conditions made for a challenging project, but in the end a spectacular space for tomorrow’s leaders to call home.

 

 

Wohlsen Construction 

Wohlsen Construction  is awarded an Excellence in the GC/CM $15 million-$20 million category for HealthSouth. Wohlsen and Robbins & Morton teamed up to provide both preconstruction and construction management services for the nationwide post-acute rehabilitation specialists to construct its new 34-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Middletown.

 

 

Wohlsen Construction 

In the GC/CM $2 million-$5 million category, the Excellence is awarded to Wohlsen Construction for Christiana Care’s AM Surgical Intake at Christiana Hospital. Wohlsen provided preconstruction and construction services for the project, which included extensive renovations to office space, courtyard demolition and an addition with rooftop patio.

 

 

Worth & Company

Worth & Company is awarded the Excellence in the mechanical under-$2 million category for TEVA Pharmaceuticals. The TEVA project was a demolition and remodel of lab space. The specialty project involved multiple disciplines, entailed heavy coordination, and required a tight schedule. The project scope included constructing and installing plumbing, process piping, ductwork and fixtures, and installation of owner equipment.
