First annual Delaware “Paws for the Cause” Fundraiser

Bonnie Benson, a local attorney, hosted a successful “Paws for the Cause” fundraiser last Sunday to benefit research efforts to cure K-9 Cancer.

The event, held at J.D. Shuckers on Del. 24 in Lewes featured entertainment by Paul Cullen and a hugely successful silent auction which featured many items donated from several local businesses and individuals.

It is estimated that as many as 1 in 3 dogs will get cancer and that approximately 50 percent of dogs above 10 years of age will die of cancer. To support the research to find a cure for K-9 cancer, this inaugural event generated more than $5,000 and—unique in fundraising—100 percent of all donations and proceeds will directly support canine cancer studies.

The support from local dog owners and dog lovers was astounding. More than 200 people attended this event in honor of their own fallen canines or simply because of their love of dogs.

“The outpouring of support was really heartwarming and we are looking forward to the next event for this cause, hopefully a Golf Tournament in the Spring”, says Leanne Silicato of Make My Day Event Planning.

Bonnie, whose love of her dog companions Trapper, Scooch, Moose and Checkers, has long looked for a cause to be passionate about and when she learned of the non-profit organization “Chase Away K-9 Cancer Foundation” she knew she had to organize a local effort and “Paws for the Cause Foundation” was born.

Bonnie’s own dog, Checkers, suffers from a rare nerve tumor and having experienced the possibility and reality of how disease can affect her life and her dog, this cause seemed to be the perfect outlet to offer her support and devotion.

“Our dogs bring so much joy and companionship to our lives and I wanted to find a way to help cure canine cancer and related illnesses with the hope that one day in the future, our canine companions may lead longer and healthier lives”, Bonnie says.
