Fred Drake Automotive

Anyone who has ever owned an automobile recognizes the importance of having a mechanic who is reliable and trustworthy.

That’s why residents of the MOT area have been heading to Fred Drake Automotive in Townsend for 30 years. Fred Drake founded the business in 1968 as Drake’s Body Shop in Wilmington. His son, Fred Jr., moved the business to Townsend in the mid-1980s, and he and his son Kiel have gradually transformed it into a full-service repair business, handling everything from oil changes and brake repairs to rebuilding engines and transmissions, while continuing to operate the body shop as well. And, if a vehicle breaks down on the road, Fred Drake offers towing service too.

“Our scope has expanded, but we’ve kept the family atmosphere,” says Kiel Drake, who grew up in the shop and is now its general manager. “We’re a very positive company and we try to make everything as convenient as possible,” he says. Those conveniences include offering shuttle service within a 10-mile radius of the shop and giving customers the ability to make appointments and view their vehicle’s service history online.

Fred Drake Automotive has been accredited by the Better Business Bureau for more than 10 years.

“There’s a lot of mistrust in the auto repair industry, and our mission is to break that stereotype,” Kiel Drake says. “BBB membership is an important symbol of our accountability to the public.”
